This week I met in person NewsGator founder Greg Reinacker and CEO JB Holsten, and, as direct competitor it is odd for me (even more so for those who know me) to not only to think but to (gasp) post the following – they’re great guys, and glad we had a chance to finally meet! Both NewsGator and Attensa are drinking the RSS Kool-Aid. So, congrats to the teams that worked on NGES (NewsGator Enterprise Server) – our Attensa Server will be available soon as well and we are anxious to join you. Wink-wink.
Fortunately or unfortunately, depending how you look at it, NewsGator and Attensa and KnowNow are NOT as early as many think to market (or in our case almost to market) as the Fortune 500 on down is scrambling to get a handle on RSS. “Getting a handle” is two-pronged; 1) RSS is wreaking havoc as employees have discovered the obvious benefits and there are very few commercial caliber clients and even fewer server solutions and 2) RSS can solve A LOT of problems better than conventional means with regard to business logic, collaboration, communications, competitive analysis and so much more…
I am new to blogging as a contributor but for years I have been an ardent consumer of blog based news, commentary, dreaming, and even the occasional misguided manifesto. I would never mention a competitor in the “old days” but in this era of “everything you know is wrong” with regard to marketing, development and sales in the software business, I figure what the hell. I’ve even told several customers about NewsGator’s Enterprise Server because our offering will not be available until Q4 2005. eWeek covered NewsGator’s announcement (again) even though it still is not yet available, not sure exactly when, and not sure how much. Why? Because readers of eWeek (and InfoWorld and ComputerWorld etc.) who buy stuff like this – are ALL OVER RSS!
In the end, we believe Attensa will be a major force in the RSS industry because of our attention stream centric infrastructure and related services. Fast forward to 2008 and ideally we envision our technology embedded in web sites, servers, and clients. So who knows, perhaps by 2008 NewsGator might be a customer/partner?!
